SHORT MAT BOWLS

Update as at 23rd April 2007:

The sessions are held at the Dunnington Sports Club - Malcolm Johnson Suite - on Thursday evenings - 1900 to 2200 during the winter break for a total of 18 weeks with a few breaks in-between  due to other bookings. The average attendance is approx 12 which is a good enough number to play and enjoy the evening.

Each player pays £1 to register for the season and £1 per session. We also have a competition each session for various prizes.

Throughout the season we also play friendly matches against other local Clubs.

Contacts for the Short Mat are: Derek Walker, John Taylor and Mike Pulpher.

                  Season 2006/2007 Report

As a regular player the most important fact from the season is that the RED team beat the BLUE team on the last session 28-8 and I am sure that this will continue...! You need to play to understand the importance of this! However we will not discuss the Ladies v Gents results here as the Ladies are apparently better than the men!

A meeting was held on the 12th April to elect Officers for next season and the following were elected:

Chairman: Derek Walker -  Unanimous
Treasurer: John Taylor   -  Proposed by Janet Walker, seconded by Mike Pulpher - unanimous.
Secretary: Mike Pulpher   - Unanimous

The Treasurer presented his report to the meeting with the main points as follows:
Another good season for the Short Mat Section. We registered 32 members and amounted to £32 Registration fees and £330 playing fees.
Taking into account all income and expenditure for the season we have donated £150 to BOTH the Playing Fields Association and to Dunnington Bowls Club which is excellent and was well received.
This has left us with £67.83 to carry forward to next season. A full copy of the accounts can be obtained from any of the above if so desired. The Treasurer’s Report accepted by the meeting following proposal by Janet Walker and seconded by Wilf Anderson - unanimous vote.

It was agreed to keep subscriptions and playing fees the same. See above.

A proposal was put to the meeting with regards to joining a Short Mat Bowls league and each member was asked to vote for this and their availability. Although we received 8 definite votes for the league we did not think this was sufficient and have agreed NOT to join a league for next season.

Chairman’s Report:

“Two years ago John Taylor, Mike Pulpher and myself decided to revive short mat bowling at Dunnington. We had no idea what the outcome would be and have been pleasantly surprised by the level of support received.
I would like to thank John Taylor for the excellent way in which he has handled our finances, not only does he produce end of season balance sheets he also produces weekly financial summary sheets from which we can see the exact state of our finances. My thanks are also extended to Mike for helping to set up the equipment each week and for handling our publicity.
I would also like to thank all those people who have generously donated prizes for our KO competitions and party nights.
This season we have played 4 friendly matches against Stamford Bridge (won 3 lost 1). We have also played matches against two Selby League teams Tate & Lyle and North Duffield loosing both, however. we have gained valuable experience playing on different carpets.
As for our in house activities we have gradually evolved a format which everyone seems to enjoy. The Blues v Reds evokes some friendly banter but the ladies v gents is something else. The men have been trounced twice this season and foul play is suspected in some quarters but not by me. The singles KO competitions and party nights are also well supported.
Thank you all for supporting short mat bowls nights during the winter months.”
